Wear Purple: Support Victims of Domestic Violence

This all started as a school project.

For our Spanish 5-6 class, we had to create a campaign to help support a cause that affects our society. To begin with, it was just a way to start using formal commands in Spanish, as well as other new vocabulary. We met our groups, and our group sat down and started discussing topics. Everyone seemed to be doing breast cancer awareness, since October is breast cancer awareness month. We wanted to do something different.

"Well, what about domestic violence?"

All of us seemed to agree. It seemed like a good enough idea, right? It's an important thing, and October turned out to be domestic violence awareness month as well.

However, we had no idea how important it would turn out.

We began brainstorming, and as our ideas grew, the importance of this cause grew. We soon realized how serious of a topic we had chosen, seeing videos of horrendous things, and having to speak with the principal about whether or not we even had permission to run such a campaign. It began to work its way into our hearts as something more than just another school project.

Domestic violence is one of the worst issues in our society. It tears apart families, since it affects everyone . It causes people in physical harm, as well as mental, since it not only destroys a person's body, but their mind, knowing that they may be hurt. The worst part is that more often than not, it goes unnoticed. Many people are afraid to tell others that they are abused, in fear that they will be hurt even worse if they do.

These people need to know that there is help and support to be found. If they let it continue, it will only worsen, and they are putting themselves and their families in danger. That is the purpose of this whole thing.

So, wear purple on Wednesday, October 13th to show that there is support, and there is a way to get away.

The hardest step is telling someone that you need help. We are here to show people that there is help, and plenty of support.
